The remarks that are getting racists all in an uproar came from the opening remarks by Tom Tancredo.

Here’s what Tom Actually Said, “Mostly because I think we do not have a civics literacy test before people can vote in the country, people who could not even spell the word, “vote,” or say it in English, put a committed, socialist ideologue in the White House. The name is Barack Hussein Obama.”

So, I submit that anyone saying this requirement discriminates against blacks (oops, is African-American the PC and acceptable term right this moment?) is also saying that blacks are uneducated and/or too stupid to understand basic civics. I find that to be pretty darn offensive, don't you?

Flymast ... are you saying that the literacy requirement for voting is unfair to the African-American community? Why would it be unfair? Are you saying that African-Americans are less literate than the rest of the American population? Less able to be literate? I don't understand ... enlighten us, please.

Me, I'd rather see a tax paying requirement for voting enacted. If you don't pay taxes out of money that you have earned yourself (not welfare or other handouts), then you cannot vote for legislators or legislation that would have an effect on others' income or property taxes that they pay, OR for the handouts that are paid for by my taxes. Fair is fair, right?

Really? They said they wanted to institute literacy tests so they could keep black people from voting? I'm going to have to go back and watch the film, because if that's true, it's definitely not something I'd be down with.

But then again, this is the first I've heard of it. Surely there's a transcript or youtube video you could link to?

I am a 52 year old African-American and heard the racist comments made at this convention about requiring literacy tests which were eliminated in the 60's after years of bloodshed, brutality, and marching by black americans and found it absurd that a group of Americans would applaud to even consider bringing this back. You folks have a big fight on your hands if you think this will return; if you want a revolution you will definetly get one if you try to push this because the African-American community will not stand by and let this happen. I'm just appauled at this entire function and the comments that came out of this.
