Just like guns aren’t a problem in and of themselves. People shooting other people is the problem.
The problem with AI is the sociopaths building and using it.
I read aloud to my kids every single night at bedtime when they were small. We’d read for at least 30 minutes every night, and often for more than an hour.
It helped them build literacy, comprehension, and vocabulary. It wasn’t just “story time”. It was teaching them how to be a reader.
It helped them develop an imagination; to visualize things by description instead of having someone else’s interpretation fed to them through a screen.
It gave my wife some much-deserved time to herself after caring for them all day.
Most of all, it was time I got to be with them doing something we all loved in a relaxed and calm atmosphere. I hope it established, one night at a time, that I love them, love spending time with them, and am someone they can rely on.
Without a doubt, bedtime reading was the most productive and enjoyable time I’ve spent over the last 20 years.
