Wall Street Still Thinks Germany Is Bluffing

It’s not clear why investors should believe Germany is just bluffing. Could it be that American investors are so used to a central bank opting for easy money that they cannot conceive a truly hawkish Bundesbank? Or that since US politicians are so supportive of major banks the possibility of German politicians actually making a decision that could hurt the banking sector grievously seems impossible?

Markets are logical over the long term.

Career Ruin: Homeschooling

I realized that public school is like Social Security. There is no money to do what we are pretending we are aiming to do. We should just grow up and admit that we cannot have effective public schools for everyone. Just like we cannot have Social Security for everyone.

Apple Trumps Google as Most Valuable Brand – Shocked Coca-Cola doesn’t trump both. The carbonate sugar water industry is much more stable than technology. Do you think it’s even within the realm of possibility that someone could knock KO from its perch? Can you say the same for Google and Apple?

Google’s Moats, “The Wire” Reviewed, and Hagar Abduction Link Dump

Android as Google’s Moat – I like this take on Android as a defensive product for Google. I also like what that implies for us as consumers–costs keep decreasing while functionality keeps increasing. Can you believe someone wanted to charge for a web browser at one time? Now there are several free browsers, and they are still trying to out-do each other in features and speed!

The Quintessentially Victorian Vision of Ogden’s “The Wire” – Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Are We Better Off Today? – Definitely. I think the problem is that we have a skewed idea of "comfortable". If I have food in my belly and shoes (hopefully some $1 Old Navy flip-flops) on my feet and I'm not bleeding, chances are I'd say I'm comfortable.

Stricter Limits on Debit Cards Coming? – No worries…they’ll be happy to issue you a credit card to cover larger purchases. Of course, the interest rate on that card will be about 10-20 times the amount of interest they are paying you on the MONEY YOU ALREADY HAVE BUT CAN’T SPEND BECAUSE THEY SET SUCH LOW LIMITS. Better not be late with that payment. Big banks suck.

Gmail Launches Non-Threaded “Feature”

Gmail’s threaded, conversation based approach to email is one of the things that sold me on it early on. But I know there are people who don’t like it and prefer the traditional “one message, one line in my inbox” way of viewing their email.

Fair enough–diff’rent strokes and all. But I always thought it was a little unfortunate that people didn’t take advantage of all the other great gmail features because they didn’t like the threaded messages, especially small businesses that could use Google’s awesome services so easily.

Today, Google announced the ability to turn the threaded feature off. That means people who are used to the Microsoft Outlook type email will be able to use gmail more comfortably while still taking advantage of all the other great features like search and filtering.

Good move on Google’s part to try to include these folks. I approve.

Living Off The Fat of Our Great Land — For Profit

Selling free food is now known as “entrepreneurial foraging“. It’s for the ubercool only.

When Walmart carries organic frozen dinners and even your neighbor with the Hummer is touting the environmental efficacy and bonus deliciousness of peaches grown within a 50-mile radius of the neighborhood co-op, foraging represents the next link on the food chain of greener-than-thou eating.

This is sort of like charging panhandlers $2 the morning after a kegger to scavenge for yard beers and empty cans for recycling. In my day, we were just happy they were willing to come by and clean up after us. It was a voluntary symbiotic relationship before the Wall Street Fat Cats got involved.

Galco’s Soda Pop Stop – So cool. I saw a video on the owner linked from Seth Godin. I love to see people doing stuff like this. There's a guy right down the street with a little business called Mailman Joey's who sells specialty sodas as well. How's this for a rule for your kids–you can only have soda that comes in a glass bottle and is made with real cane sugar. That's my new rule for me anyway.

Chick Delay – Another Big Money Maker

chik-fil-a

Feel free to implement this business idea. I only work in the abstract.

Ever notice how you always want Chick-fil-A on Sundays? I mean you crave it on Sundays, right? You do anything for a Chick-fil-A to be open on a Sunday, right?

The concept of Chick Delay is simple:

  • Every Saturday night, put in a catering order for a bunch of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. Keep it simple–just order the basic sandwich.
  • People will be desperate for these sandwiches on Sundays, so there’s really no need to invest in processes like flash freezing or warmers, just throw them into a box, pile them up on your sofa, whatever.
  • Set up your stand sometime around 10 or 11 am on Sunday morning and start selling the stale sandwiches at a 20% markup. Don’t get greedy with the price–people are going to have unrealistic quality expectations if they are paying too much.
  • You may even want to look into using the Chick-Fil-A parking lot since they aren’t using it. See how many sandwiches you can sell before the police shut you down.

You’re welcomed.
